DOPPLE BOCK Bock beers in Germany are traditionally strong lager beers. Doppel, in German means double. Putting this together, we have a doubly strong lager beer. The flavor is similar to the Oktoberfest, only stronger on all flavor notes. The color is a deep red. Doppel bock has become a traditional holiday beer for the Germans. The old German breweries would lager (age) this beer all through the summer and fall [for a Winter release] in ice caves under the brewery. This beer was rumored to have nutritional sustenance properties due to its strength. This beer was part of the daily diet of German monks. In fact Bock beer was the only nutrition Martin Luther allowed himself during his fast known as the "Diet of Worms." Worms is a German city, he was not eating worms. Back to the Beer Index |
